Biography

Cellist Alexandra Roedder holds degrees in music from UC Berkeley, baroque cello from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, as well as her doctorate in musicology and her master's in cello performance from UCLA. Dr. Roedder's background as a scholar and her experience in historical performance practice lend nuance to her interpretations of the standard classical repertoire.

She began cello at age 6 and 362 days, approximately six months after she started telling her friends she was taking cello, and three years after she first asked for lessons. Her early teachers included Nina Flyer and Irene Sharp, and her teachers in college and graduate school were Leighton Fong, Elisabeth Reed, Lucia Swarts, and Antonio Lysy.

She currently performs regularly with the Sacramento Baroque Soloists, InConcert Sierra, Camerata California, the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, the Sacramento Philharmonic, and many other local orchestras. Her masterclass credits include such teachers as Lynn Harrell, Susan Lamb Cook, Rohan de Saram, and Paul Katz on modern cello, and Tanya Tomkins, Balasz Mate, Jaap ter Linden, and Anner Bylsma on baroque cello.

In recent years she has been a soloist with the Music in the Mountains Youth Orchestra, the Auburn Symphony, and the Folsom Lake Symphony. Dr. Roedder also holds position of Principal Cellist with both the Auburn and Folsom Lake Symphonies, and maintains a large teaching studio with students aged 4 to 84.
